Conference Overview: Current Status of Indoor Environmental Quality for Durable, Sustainable Buildings
The 'greening' of buildings is a hot topic among architects, developers, contractors and many more professionals associated with the construction and maintenance of new and existing buildings. There are more questions than answers due to the mass amounts of information (and misinformation) available to these professionals. With many new technologies, codes, practices and standards emerging, the Construction Solutions Conference is designed to give professionals a synopsis focusing on the most current solutions for durable and sustainable buildings. A review of health and legal issues, building envelope, roofing and ventilation, sustainability and management programs surrounding mould and indoor environmental quality will be the central issues explored.

New Health and Building Ventilation Information and Guidelines Related to Indoor Air Quality and Mould
New reports on the health effects of mould and damp buildings from the Institute of Medicine and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology will be discussed as well as the impact of these reports on current personal injury and construction litigation in the US. Association websites covering the prevention of mould on wallboard and lumber will be referenced. In addition, new standards and guidelines recently published for the control and prevention of mould issues in the building envelope and mechanical systems during construction and remediation and cleaning of mould in existing buildings will be presented. These will include the Canadian Construction Association new Mould Guideline which now has the most immediate legal force in the construction industry, the new Health Canada Mould Remediation Guideline and the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) Remediation Standard (S-520).

Civionics: The Future of Moisture Management in Buildings
Solutions for mould and moisture issues by innovative use and application of proven existing technologies, as well as new technological advances, are now available to meet the needs of the construction and real estate industries. Solutions to be presented range from new technologies for building with permanent, durable materials to proactive measures like permanently installed moisture sensors and post tensioned cable monitoring systems. This session will focus on the issues surrounding moisture management in new construction.

Building Technologies That Break The Mould
There are numerous and varied types of construction materials in use today. Moisture affects all materials differently; as well mould grows on some materials more consistently than on others. Different materials require different methods to control moisture and mould problems. This session brings together a panel of experts to discuss these issues with respect to some of the most common construction materials in use today in British Columbia including dimensioned and engineered wood products, structural board and plywood, cement and masonry, and building wraps used for air and vapor barriers. Roofing issues will be addressed including wind uplift test at FM, the acoustics, underlayments, overlayment to meet UL classifications, and moisture resistance.

The Impact of the Commissioning Process on Mould and Indoor Air Quality
Changes to ASHRAE ventilation and comfort standards, the use of the commissioning process, and ongoing evolution of HVAC equipment, design, operations, inspection and maintenance procedures influence the indoor air quality performance of buildings. An update on ASHRAE commissioning process guidelines and how the process improves performance relative to IAQ and mould growth will be provided. An overview of the impact of defining and using measurable performance criteria to verify achievement of project requirements, including moisture control during construction, envelope integrity for air and water infiltration, ventilation mixing effectiveness, building pressurization and roofing performance.

Diagnosing Mould and Design Strategies To Avoid It
This session will begin by presenting an overview to help better understand the factors that affect indoor air quality in addition to why mould develops in buildings. The panel of experts will discuss the cost effective diagnostic and risk management methods available to assess indoor air quality and prevent moisture intrusion to help avoid mould problems. Additionally, your experts will demonstrate how to inspect, diagnose the extent of a mould issue and how to effectively mitigate a mould issue when it is identified.

Building a Better Envelope
The durability of any building is largely determined by the performance of its building envelope. Building a better envelope can include challenges, as it is a comprised of many components all of which are expected to work as a system and perform an individual function. This seminar will discuss common and progressive methods of creating a better envelope. Topics include; sustainability reality check, the myth about R values, the importance of air sealing, effects of convective air on board and batt insulation, air barrier system test procedures, vapour permeance, ease of construction, sustainability and of course, cost. Water penetration, EIFS and stucco, spray foam insulation, breather membranes and other progressive technologies will also be presented.

Be Proactive – Effectively Managing Environmental Risks of Mould and IAQ
Poor indoor environmental quality and mould have forced both public and private sector buildings and their management, including health care and school institutions, to instill proactive measures to reduce the potential dangers and consequences associated with them. Addressing these issues so that risk is managed efficiently and in a cost effective manner will be discussed.

Exposed To Claims – Uninsured – What To Do Next?
According to the media, attorneys and consultants, IAQ and mould and moisture problems continue to surface in public and commercial buildings, "affecting the health of its occupants", and "causing significant structural damage to the buildings and their contents".
Faced with this dilemma, the liability and property insurance industry has responded by withdrawing coverage for mould and water ingress claims, leaving those responsible for the buildings' design and construction unprotected in a very hostile environment.
It is of critical importance that regulatory authorities, builders, developers, property managers, designers and all those involved in the building and real estate industry be armed with the most recent and accurate information related to these problems to make effective risk management decisions.
This panel will bring together technical, remedial and legal experts to discuss the design, construction, insurance and liability issues involved and to give some practical advice on how to navigate through these troubled waters.
