Conference Overview: Current Status Of Indoor Environmental Quality For Durable, Sustainable Buildings

The 'greening' of buildings is a hot topic among architects, developers, contractors and many more professionals associated with the construction and maintenance of new and existing buildings. There are more questions than answers due to the mass amounts of information (and misinformation) available to these professionals. With many new technologies, codes, practices and standards emerging, the building envelope, ventilation and moisture solutions conference is designed to give professionals a synopsis focusing on the most current solutions for durable and sustainable buildings. A review of health and legal issues, building envelope and diagnostic methods, ecoroofs, moisture control and ventilation and building commissioning will be the central issues explored.

Exposed To Claims – Uninsured – What To Do Next?

According to the media, attorneys and consultants, IAQ and mould and moisture problems continue to surface in public and commercial buildings, "affecting the health of its occupants", and "causing significant structural damage to the buildings and their contents". Faced with this dilemma, the liability and property insurance industry has responded by withdrawing coverage for mould and water ingress claims, leaving those responsible for the buildings' design and construction unprotected in a very hostile environment. It is of critical importance that regulatory authorities, builders, developers, property managers, designers and all those involved in the building and real estate industry be armed with the most recent and accurate information related to these problems to make effective risk management decisions. This panel will bring together technical, remedial and legal experts to discuss the design, construction, insurance and liability issues involved and to give some practical advice on how to navigate through these troubled waters.

Building Technologies That Break The Mould

There are numerous and varied types of construction materials in use today. Moisture affects all materials differently; as well mould grows on some materials more consistently than on others. Different materials require different methods to control moisture and mould problems. New advanced electronic monitoring systems provide critical information on moisture levels that enable proper risk assessment and a proactive approach to building maintenance. This session brings together a panel of experts to discuss these issues with respect to some of the most common construction materials in use today in British Columbia such as Gypsum wall boards, Exterior Sheathings and their paperless alternatives

The Critical Building Envelope Details: Where Are The Problem Areas

The presentation will review the critical building envelope details that commonly suffer from excessive water penetration. The proper design of these details will be reviewed with respect to low-rise, high-rise, wood-frame and commercial construction. "Concero Cautus Fragmentum"...Join the Pieces Carefully.

11:05 am – 12:00 pm
Alternative Remediation Techniques for Mould

Recent years have seen new techniques and technologies for mould abatement emerge. There are many different opinions about these technologies, but all professionals involved with mould and I.A.Q. issues need to be aware and educated on the most cutting edge techniques available to them. This seminar will begin by discussing the importance of rapid response after water damage to prevent mould propagation with a focus on desiccant dehumidification and lead into a discussion on "non-traditional" options available to remediation technicians, owners and property managers.

Outside Air Ventilation For Buildings...What Your Mother Did Not Tell You

Outside air ventilation can account for 30 to 60% of the total heating and cooling costs for a building, yet it is one of the few parameters of building operation that is generally not measured or controlled. This session will review current rules of thumb used in our industry that can result in tremendous over and under ventilation of buildings that can impact energy usage, comfort and in some cases can cause IAQ, mold and moisture problems. This is an issue that affects all buildings and their operation. Based on the quality mantra “you cannot control what you do not measure”, Mike will review sensor approaches that can be used to provide real time and accurate feedback control to ensure a building always has appropriate economizer and outside air delivery that balances comfort, energy and indoor air quality concerns.

2:05 pm – 2:40 pm
Investigative Tools For Diagnosing Mould Issues

This session will begin by presenting an overview to help better understand the factors that affect indoor air quality in addition to why mould develops in buildings. The presenter will discuss the diagnostic and risk management methods available to assess indoor air quality and mould. Further, he will demonstrate how to inspect, diagnose the extent of a mould issue and how to effectively mitigate a mould issue when it is identified.

2:40 pm – 3:15 pm
Internet and IAQ: Proactively Managing Risk in Commercial Buildings

This presentation will give useful and thought provoking ideas to commercial building managers regarding building performance and indoor air quality (IAQ). The focus will be on benefits of a proactive program of air quality monitoring, coupled with web based data processing and reports. For asset managers who are responsible for multiple buildings, the web based approach means access from anywhere in the world, and the ability to generate reports documenting good IAQ performance.

Being proactive means identifying and correcting issues before they become public or known to your tenants. Demonstrating good IAQ performance can lead to multiple benefits such as higher tenant satisfaction and retention, good public relations, lower insurance rates and overall costs, reduced risk and sustainability.

Ecoroofs: A Sustainable Development Strategy Suitable For BC

Ecoroofs or green roofs refer to specialized roofing systems that support vegetative growth on rooftops. These lightweight, low-maintenance systems provide multiple economic and environmental benefits to the urban areas. Many North American cities such as Toronto, Chicago and Washington have already incorporated this technology into their sustainable development strategies. This presentation will give an overview of green roof technology, demonstrate how green roofs can address sustainability in the urban areas through latest scientific research and discuss design considerations for green roofs in BC.
